The baseball:chapter 13

the top ten lists and other things of interests

This chapter is basicly a list with details the first list is of the top 7 most known "Ballhawks". my two favortie "Ballhawks" are Moe Mullins and Rich Buhrke, mostly becuase the both go to wrigly feild to catch the balls but also becuase have a ball of cubs history. Mullins, born on October 11, 1950 in Lima, Ohio, and is a truck driver. He has snagged 5,441 baseballs from over 13 diffrent stadiums. Also Mullins caught Sammy Sosas 62nd home run ball, 1998, the year he broke the record for most home runs in a single season. My second favorite, Rich Buhrke, was bron on June 22, 1946 in Chicago Illinoise, and is a security guard. Buhrke has snagged 3,476 balls. Allthough Buhrke didnt catch as many balls as Mullins, Buhrke has the history. He caught Jay Johnstone's 100th Career home run, Bill Melton's 100th, Ron santo's 300th, and 5 game winning grand slams.

His next list is a list of the ten best stadiums to snagg a ball at:

1.) Camden Yards, home to the Baltimore Oriales

2.)Kauffman Stadium, home to the Kansas City Royals

3.)At&T Park, home to the San Fransisco Giants

4.) Rangers Ballpark, home to the Texas Rangers

5.) Progressive Field, home to the Cleveland Indians

6.) Turner Field, home to the Atlanta Braves

7.) Miller Park, home to the Milwaukee Brewers

8.)Petco Park, home to the San Diego Padres

9.) Chase Field, home to the Arizona Diamondbacks

10.) PNC Park, home to the Pittsburgh Pirates

6 Poems for monday:

The Baseball: Zack Hample

This chapter talks about how Zack became a well known ball-hawk. zack has only asked for ball once and it was when he was younger, he had to ask in spanish to get it. Zack has snagged over 4,800 baseballs from 48 diffrent stadiums since 1990. Zack knows how to say "Throw me the ball in 5 differnt languages, American, Japanese, Chinese, swahili, and spanish. Zack has a one rule and one rule only "No ball-hawking from little kids, and minor league games dont count." Zacks two favorite stadiums are Wrigly field, Chicago, and Camden yards, Baltimore. He likes wrigley becuase it is a hitter friendly park (Short fence to right and left) and behind the left feild stands is wavelyn avenue, and too the right, Sheffield drive, Two roads to stand on, so in the end, you can go to wrigley and snagg a ball without even buying a ticket. Zacks second favorite, Camden Yards, is not a hitter friendly park but behind the plate is the shortest backstop which means foul balls that are hit backwards are very likely to end up on the street making it easy to snag a ball.

Zack has writen three books, "How To Snag A Major League Baseball", "The baseball",and "Watching Baseball Smarter". His newest one is "The Baseball" It came out in march of 2011 which is the book that I am reading now, but i have also read his other two books. I dont read his books for the tips on how to snag a baseball, but becuase baseball is my favorite sport and Zack Hample goes into detail about how the game is played and some of the things we dont see on the field.

The Baseball: The Ball Lour

At one time the balls were so valuable that the winning team got to keep the ball. It could not have been much of a prize since the goal was to use one ball for the entire game. Even foul balls were thrown back into play. That is not the case today. today, the typical lifespan of a major league baseball is fewer than six pitches. On average, each team needs at least 9,000 balls per season. Multiply that by 30 teams and that is 27,000 balls per season. Each ball must be rubbed with Lena Blackburne's mud before each game. each team only uses a certain amount of the mud on the teams baseballs. The change in the rules in recent years have helped the flow of the game before we had to wait for the fans to throw the ball back before they could continue to play nowadays teams have thousands of balls to use and don't need to worry about losing them. this also has helped major league batters because since there is no worry about losing balls fields were made smaller and it was easier to hit home runs even shortstops and the occasional pitcher can hit one out. the change in rules have changed the way the game will be played for the next century. players start hitting more home runs, games get more interesting, more fans means more money. The change of rules have made the teams far more money than they would of by saving a few baseballs from leaving the field.

This book interests me a lot, I like baseball and all this book talks about is baseball, Americas favor tie past time. This book is interesting to me for two reasons it talks about all the best players and its about the best sport in the world. I have read his other book, "how to catch a major league baseball", and it was very good but this book talks more about the evolution of the game and that gets me into his book because I get to learn from it while enjoying it.

The baseball: pages 1-100

This is not your typical book, there is no story line, it is just facts and freak accidents that happen in the world of baseball, Americas past time. The first chapter is titled the souvinear craze this has a list of "ballhawks" or people who go to games just to catch a foul ball or even, if they are lucky, a homerun. Charlee sheen is one of the most wellknown ballhawks even though he has never caught one he as attempted to. At a dogger game a few years ago charlee sheen baught all the seats in the outfield to attempt to catch a homerun ball from either team, after the game he did not end up with one but he was interveiwed and when asked why he did that he responded, "i didnt want to hurt anyone who got in my way." The second chapter in titled foul ball lour, it talks about the rule of the foul ball. Before reading this book i did not know that teams paid for the ball so they wanted the ball backl if it ever ended up in the stands. This rule was the creation of polo grounds a feild that is 483 to center feild an unreachable distance at the time.

KG'S BEAST!!!!

As u can read in the title KG's blog is "beast" or Dankin' which ever you prefer. He talks about sports and mostly Jimmer, a terrible player for BYU. He also uses high diction words and word we Learn in class for example, Dank. I am looking forward to more post by the mysterious KG, he does not give his real name, so, no one knows who he is.

Who is he??

The kitten

The poem "The Kitten" is a very depressing poem, it gives the sense of sadness. The kitten was a stillborn and never got a chance to live its life. The narrator takes the cat and buries it in the field behind his or her house. The diction the author uses portrays his or her love for the kitten even though it never lived. At the end of the poem the author says "What other amazement" almost like she knows there are more moments that will be upsetting like this one.

Sacred:101-200

The car was driving on rough terrain, the two detectives could not tell where they were being taken by the two mysterious men. Once the car came to a stop, both detectives were scared of what was to happen next. Fearing for their lives they scream and squirm and try to escape. The two are taken into a room and put on the floor. Another mysterious man walks into the room and asks them if they knew who he was, the two replied "no, what do you want for us." The two detectives were cut free and were taken into another room with the new man who appeared to be the leader. Once in the new room the leader briefs them on the reason they are there. He explains to him that his daughter was kidnapped a long time ago and was never found. Later he also reveals that he is dying and does not have much time to live. He offers them each large sums of money just to try and find her before his time runs out. The two were scared at first, but as they got to know him, they knew he was for real. The both accept to look for his daughter even though she might already be dead.

After I read this, I wondered why they would help a guy they barely knew. What if he is bad news? what if the story he told them was fake? all these questions and no answers, I would never trust a guy like that.

Sacred:1-100

The start of the book explains the paths of the two detectives who's names still haven't been mentioned. The two detectives are having a normal day until the notice they are being fallowed by a tall dark man with a "deathly looking coat" The two detectives seem to be married, but that information has not been given. After a while the two decide to separate so only one would be fallowed and the other would try and find out who he or she was. After they break up the story focuses on the man he goes into a dinner, where he is fallowed to, for a muffin and some coffee. After that he decided to go to his friends gas station, where he is also fallowed to, and tells his friend that he is being fallowed and points out the man across the street. After the detective leaves the gas station he walks across the street and says hello to the man that was fallowing him. That ended up being a bad idea because he was drugged by the man and was thrown into a car after he had time to get him self together he notices that the other detective is in the car with him.

After reading this much I have gotten more into the book, it almost seems like a movie to me that I cant wait to finish. I don't know what will happen to the detectives and I don't who who took them. There are so many questions that I want answers for, I am sure I will have this book done very soon.

NY Times:Ncaa brackets

After i read the New York Times post about the NCAA brackets i realised that I never really use their advice. I believe that half the time they are wrong and only pick the teams that have the most "hype". I Still have Duke winning it all after beating Kansas in the championship game. Also i do not believe that Ohio State will make it to the final four.

Lady Antebellum - Hello World

Just watched the music video for Hello World by Lady Antebellum, it is probably the best music video i have ever seen. It is a real eye opener and catches the emotions of the viewer at the same time. It goes perfect with the song, but before I saw this video I never knew what the song was about.

Shutter Island: 1-121

The book begins on a boat and teddy, the main detective, is remembering his dad before he died in a boat accident. His new partner, chuck Aule, was standing near the front of the boat. Teddy was getting sick on the way to Shutter Island, he said it was from the amount of water that surrounded him not the waves of the ocean. When they arrive at the island the are met at the pier by Deputy Warden McPherson who was the main guard at the metal institution. They were briefed by the Deputy and a few of the other guard, but not much was said.

At this time there seemed to be a lot of tension surrounding the guards as they talked about the mystery of Rachel Solando.

When they arrive at the gate to the institution, Teddy says it seem like a jail more than a hosdtpital with the walls standing three times as tall as Teddy with a few rows of barbed wire to keep any running "patients" from leaving. They were told to hand over their guns, at first they were confused, they were there on court order why should they have to give their only defense away, but after the warden explained they were less than reluctant to give up their guns.

After I read this I was confused on why they were so cautious about their guns and why they were given rules before they entered.

After giving up their guns and listenig to the rules they had to fallow they were given a tour of the "hospital" or as Teddy calls it a jail. They were told that they can not enter ward C with out both the warden and Dr. Cawley. Ward C was for their most "disturbed" Patients and was located in an old fort used during the war. After the tour they were both told the problem they had. A patient named Rachel Solando escaped from a locked cell with barred windows. When Teddy and Chuck went to the room they searched it thoroughly and found a slip of paper she had left behind her bed. The note said:

THE LAW OF 4

I AM 47
THEY WERE 80

+YOU ARE3

WE ARE 4
BUT
WHO IS 67?

I had to read this note 5 times and still do not understand what Rachel is saying. Wat is the law of 4? Are the numbers she talking about the number of patients?

Three Min. Fiction: Freedom

In this short story there is a sense of eeriness because it is set in the time of war. During the story you feel bad for the characters the 9 year old kid is having to eat cold hard bread and wear the sane cloths day in and day out, but the 9 year old was selfish. He took the bread from the other person. They always said they had to work for freedom. In the end that was not true one of the kids worked hard, but was pushed into a pit and never seen again. The short story, Freedom, is a sad story that shows what people, even kids, have to go through in the time of war.

Racket Ball

Racket ball has to be one of the most dangerous sports. For the first time today i got hit in the head with the ball while playing with my brother in-law. It doesn't hurt until after the numbness goes away then you get a headache and just gets worse from there. Even though you can get hurt, it still is one of my favorite sports to play.

9 Dragons: Half way point

I started this book over Christmas break and since have read it when I have the time. I have since gotten to the half way point of the book and it is more suspenseful than ever. The story takes place in California in a Chinese gang area. A murder at a local liquor store is the case for detective Boch. He has since found one suspect that sparks his interest, the suspect is part of the triad gang that came over from china. Detective Boch has finally received enough evidence to arrest the gang member but not enough to arrest for the murder. someone in the tells the gang member he is the point of interest and tries to leave for china the next day. Before he gets a chance to leave Detective Boch arrests him and brings him in for questioning, when they get back Boch receives a phone call "we have your daughter". This book has been very suspenseful and i cannot wait to finish it.
