Shutter Island: 1-121

The book begins on a boat and teddy, the main detective, is remembering his dad before he died in a boat accident. His new partner, chuck Aule, was standing near the front of the boat. Teddy was getting sick on the way to Shutter Island, he said it was from the amount of water that surrounded him not the waves of the ocean. When they arrive at the island the are met at the pier by Deputy Warden McPherson who was the main guard at the metal institution. They were briefed by the Deputy and a few of the other guard, but not much was said.

At this time there seemed to be a lot of tension surrounding the guards as they talked about the mystery of Rachel Solando.

When they arrive at the gate to the institution, Teddy says it seem like a jail more than a hosdtpital with the walls standing three times as tall as Teddy with a few rows of barbed wire to keep any running "patients" from leaving. They were told to hand over their guns, at first they were confused, they were there on court order why should they have to give their only defense away, but after the warden explained they were less than reluctant to give up their guns.

After I read this I was confused on why they were so cautious about their guns and why they were given rules before they entered.

After giving up their guns and listenig to the rules they had to fallow they were given a tour of the "hospital" or as Teddy calls it a jail. They were told that they can not enter ward C with out both the warden and Dr. Cawley. Ward C was for their most "disturbed" Patients and was located in an old fort used during the war. After the tour they were both told the problem they had. A patient named Rachel Solando escaped from a locked cell with barred windows. When Teddy and Chuck went to the room they searched it thoroughly and found a slip of paper she had left behind her bed. The note said:

THE LAW OF 4

I AM 47
THEY WERE 80

+YOU ARE3

WE ARE 4
BUT
WHO IS 67?

I had to read this note 5 times and still do not understand what Rachel is saying. Wat is the law of 4? Are the numbers she talking about the number of patients?
